To add llms.txt to WordPress, create a plain text file named llms.txt that lists your most important pages with short descriptions, then upload it to your site’s root folder so it loads at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. It takes about five minutes and needs no plugin.
What llms.txt actually is
llms.txt is an emerging standard: a simple markdown file at your domain root that guides AI systems to your canonical, most citable content. Think of it as a curated reading list for machines. Where robots.txt says what crawlers may not touch, llms.txt says here is what you should read first, with context.
The format, kept simple
The file starts with an H1 of your site name, an optional one-line summary as a blockquote, then sections of links with short descriptions. A minimal example:

Three ways to install it on WordPress
Method 1, file manager or FTP: create llms.txt on your computer, then upload it to the folder that contains wp-config.php (usually public_html). Done.
Method 2, hosting panel: most hosts’ file managers let you create a new file directly in the root; paste your content and save as llms.txt.
Method 3, plugin route: several SEO plugins now generate llms.txt from your content. Fine for convenience, but review the output; a curated file beats an auto-dump of every URL.
What to include, and what to skip
Include the pages you would want quoted: core service pages, definitive guides, your About page with company facts, pricing posture and contact. Skip thin archives, tag pages and anything you would not want summarized. Ten to thirty excellent links beat two hundred noisy ones.
How to verify it works
Load yourdomain.com/llms.txt in a browser: you should see plain text, not a 404 or your theme’s design. Then check robots.txt is not blocking it, and confirm your firewall or security plugin is not challenging bot requests to text files. If you use a CDN, purge its cache once after upload.
Does llms.txt replace robots.txt?
No. robots.txt controls access; llms.txt offers guidance. Keep both: robots.txt deciding which AI crawlers may enter, llms.txt telling the admitted ones where the good material lives.
Will this instantly change AI answers about my brand?
No single file does that. Adoption of the standard is growing, the cost is minutes, and combined with quotable content and open crawler access it strengthens the whole system. Treat it as cheap infrastructure, not magic.
