How is this different from the automations we already run?
Classic automation follows fixed rules and breaks on variation. Agents handle the messy middle: reading unstructured input, deciding among paths, using judgment within boundaries you set. Rules for the predictable, agents for the variable, humans for the consequential.
What does a first project look like?
Typically one workflow, two to four weeks to a supervised pilot, with a before-and-after time-and-quality measurement. If the numbers do not justify expansion, we say so and stop.
Guardrails: how autonomy stays safe
Every agent operates inside a written boundary spec: which tools it may use, which actions require approval, spend and volume ceilings, confidence thresholds below which it must ask, and a full action log with reversibility notes. Approval gates start tight and loosen only against the accuracy record, never against enthusiasm. The uncomfortable questions (what is the worst thing this agent could do, and what stops it) get answered in design documents before deployment, because production is a terrible place to discover them.
What happens when the agent gets something wrong?
The log shows exactly what happened and why, the action reverses where reversible, the failure pattern enters the evaluation suite so regressions get caught automatically, and the boundary spec tightens if needed. Error handling is a designed subsystem, not an apology process.
