A service area business marks up correctly using LocalBusiness schema with an areaServed property listing the cities or regions covered, while the physical address either stays private or points to a registered location not shown publicly. The pattern lets plumbers, cleaners and mobile services feed machines accurate coverage without pretending to have a storefront.
The problem this solves
Google’s guidelines let service area businesses hide their home address on Business Profiles, but schema tutorials assume a shop with a door. Copying storefront markup either exposes a home address or invents a fake one, and both create inconsistencies that damage the local signals the markup was meant to strengthen.
The correct pattern
Use your specific business type where one exists (Plumber, Electrician, HousePainter and dozens more are valid schema types) or LocalBusiness as the fallback. Include name, telephone, url and image. For coverage, use areaServed with an array of City or AdministrativeArea entries naming real places you serve. If regulations require a registered address, include it in the markup for entity consistency even if your profile hides it publicly, or omit address entirely; never fabricate one.
A minimal working example
A JSON-LD block with @type Plumber, your name and phone, url, and areaServed listing, for example, Jodhpur, Pali and Jaisalmer as City entries. Add openingHoursSpecification if you keep defined hours and priceRange if you are comfortable stating one. Validate in the Rich Results Test before shipping.
Keep every surface agreeing
The markup must match your Business Profile service areas, your site’s coverage pages and your citations. Machines reconcile all of them; the reward for agreement is confident local visibility, and the penalty for contradiction is hedged rankings and confused AI recommendations.
Should I list every small town I serve in areaServed?
List the meaningful ones, typically five to twenty real service areas, matching what your pages and profile claim. A two-hundred-town dump reads as spam to humans and adds nothing for machines.
Does this markup alone improve map pack rankings?
Schema is corroboration, not a ranking lever by itself: it strengthens the consistency that rankings rest on. Pair it with profile depth, reviews and location-relevant pages for movement.
