To find the questions people ask before buying, mine six free sources: Google’s People Also Ask and autocomplete, community threads on Reddit and Quora, customer reviews of you and competitors, your own sales emails and chat logs, the AI assistants buyers now interrogate, and Search Console’s query report. Together they map the real pre-purchase interrogation.
Source 1: Google tells you directly
Search your product category and expand People Also Ask; each click breeds more questions, and ten minutes yields dozens verbatim. Autocomplete adds the phrasings: type your category plus each question word and each letter, and note what completes. These are questions with proven search demand.
Source 2: communities, where doubt speaks freely
Search Reddit and Quora for your category plus words like worth it, versus, anyone used, regret. Threads reveal the anxious questions people ask strangers precisely because vendor pages will not answer them: hidden costs, failure cases, honest comparisons.
Source 3: reviews, yours and rivals’
One-star and three-star reviews across your competitors are a syllabus of unanswered pre-purchase questions: what buyers wish they had known. Your own reviews show which doubts survived your current content.
Source 4: your inbox already knows
Export a month of sales emails, chats and call notes; cluster the questions. These carry the highest intent of all, and every recurring one is a page that should exist, answering it before the call.
Source 5: ask the assistants
Prompt ChatGPT or Perplexity: what questions do buyers ask before choosing a [category]? Then: what would make someone hesitate? The models compress the public record of buyer anxiety into lists your content calendar can eat.
Turning the pile into a map
Deduplicate, cluster by theme, tag by funnel stage, and score by how often each appeared across sources. Frequency across independent sources is your priority signal; answer the loudest clusters first, answer-first, one canonical page per question.
How is this different from keyword research?
Keyword tools show volume on phrases; this shows the interrogation behind purchases, including questions too specific for volume data yet decisive in sales. The methods complement; the questions convert.
We run this mapping inside Semantic SEO and answer it through Answer Engine Optimization.
